Language of the Day: Christmas Phrasal Verbs

Learning to use phrasal verbs is an important part of speaking English more fluently, so here are a few of them that you can use over the holiday season!

 

look forward to

Meaning: to wait for something with excitement

I’m really looking forward to the Christmas party next week!

put up

Meaning: to place or hang a decoration

When do you usually put your Christmas tree up?
Have you already
put up your stockings?

dress up

Meaning: to wear a more formal outfit than usual OR to wear a costume

Everybody dresses up for the Christmas party. It’s a very formal event.
My uncle always
dresses up as Santa on Christmas to surprise his kids.

give out

Meaning: to distribute something among a group of people

Giving out gifts is the best part of the holiday season!

bump into

Meaning: to meet someone by chance

Last weekend I bumped into my co-worker at the mall while I was Christmas shopping.

take down

Meaning: to remove a decoration that was put up

Boxing Day gets it’s name because that’s when most people take down their Christmas decorations
