Why Cohesion Matters
Cohesion means your ideas flow logically, with clear connections between sentences and sections. A cohesive response:
Sounds natural and organized.
Helps you avoid awkward pauses.
Impresses the examiner with fluency and structure.
Key Strategies for Cohesion
Chronological Structure – Tell your story in time order.
Signposting Language – Use phrases like “First of all,” “Then,” “Finally” to guide the listener.
Linking Devices – Connect ideas with words like because, however, as a result.
Personal Reflection – End with thoughts or feelings to wrap up smoothly.
Thematic Grouping – Organize ideas by themes (e.g., setting, people, emotions).
Sample Question
Describe a memorable trip you had. You should say:
Where you went
Who you went with
What you did there
And explain why it was memorable.
Sample Response 1: Chronological + Signposting Strategy
"Well, I’d like to talk about a trip I took to Whistler last winter. First of all, I went there with two close friends because we all love skiing. When we arrived, the weather was perfect—clear skies and fresh snow. Then, we spent the first day skiing on the slopes, which was both exciting and exhausting. After that, we explored the village, tried some local food, and even went to a small art gallery. Finally, what made this trip unforgettable was the sense of freedom and laughter we shared. It was a break from our busy lives, and I still smile when I think about it."
Strategies Used:
Chronological order: Arrival → activities → reflection.
Signposting phrases: First of all, Then, After that, Finally.
Smooth ending: Personal reflection ties the story together.
Sample Response 2: Thematic Grouping + Linking Devices
"I’d like to share a trip to Whistler that stands out in my memory. The location itself was stunning, surrounded by snow-covered mountains and cozy lodges. The people I traveled with made it even better, as I went with two close friends who share my love for adventure. As for activities, we spent hours skiing, and later enjoyed local cuisine in the village. What made it truly memorable was the feeling of connection, not just with nature but with my friends. It was refreshing and gave me a new appreciation for simple joys."
Strategies Used:
Thematic grouping: Location → people → activities → reflection.
Linking devices: As for activities, What made it truly memorable was….
Emotional conclusion: Adds depth and cohesion.
